Development of sustainability assessment tools for ICT

Developing and testing techniques and tools for the assessment of media and communication products and services

Project title

Development of sustainability assessment tools for ICT – Methods for simplified assessments (2009-2011)

Project description

To reach the aims of CESC, techniques/tools to assess whether decisions, behavior, products, services, etc, are in line with sustainable development are needed. To a large extent, such tools are already available, but further development and adaptation are needed. The aim of the project is to develop and test such techniques/tools for the assessment of media and communication products and services, as well as companies, plans and policies with ICT connection. One specific aim is to develop simplified tools, e.g., indicators, for the ICT-sector and its products and services. Another aim is to focus on the social dimension of sustainable development, and methodologies for social life cycle assessment are developed in an international context. Also, the current practice for handling the social dimension in partner companies is studied. Within the project, an assessment of global energy use and emissions of carbon dioxide from the ICT and entertainment and media sectors are also performed. In related projects, we develop methods for life cycle assessment, strategic environmental assessment and valuation. Techniques and tools will be tested within the framework of this project, but also in other CESC projects.
